FasTun Saves Mobile Internet Bandwidth Usage

Website optimization is very important so that the web pages loads faster on the user’s side and also saving them bandwidth usage. Unfortunately not many websites out there are fully optimized and the visitors will just have to tolerate with it. You can’t blame them because optimizing a website is not as easy as clicking a button or installing a software. It involves deep configuration and making sure that it doesn’t break the website’s design at the same time. Not all web designers or creators are optimization experts which is why you can find professionals charging a lot of money solely for optimization service.

Fortunately there is something you can do from your side to continue visiting unoptimized websites but giving you the optimized results, saving your internet bandwidth. You can see how much bandwidth has fasTun helped you saved from the Statistics page. Login to your account at fasTun’s website and click at the Statistics link. The statistics page shows you the date, traffic volume to compression, traffic volume after compression, compression ratio and savings in MB.

There could be some lag/delays for certain users in loading websites because fasTun proxy server is located at Germany. It definitely won’t be as fast as connecting directly to your ISP. Another small annoyance that you would encounter is when you visit Google.com, it automatically redirects you to the German version of Google Search Engine (.de). All you need to do is click the “Google.com in English” link at the bottom right and it will bring you the the No Country Redirect (NCR) version of Google which is just google.com.

Although fasTun service is free, it has bandwidth and traffic limitation. The Premium paid mode cost only $1 per month which offers a faster 3 Mbit/s bandwidth speed, more web traffic 10GB per month, full anonymity, advertisement blocking and HTTPS protocol support. I tried signing up the Premium mode through share*it! and weirdly it shows a total amount of $13.99 instead of $12. I’ve already contacted fasTun about it and will update this post when I receive a response from them.

In my opinion, fasTun service is most suitable for mobile internet where postpaid users are able to reduce their Internet bandwidth usage to surf more websites or spend less money if you’re on a prepaid package.

Remove Ads from Bottom of Windows Live Messenger 2011 Conversation Window

One of a very good tool that I recommend to remove ads from Windows Live Messenger 2011 is A-Patch. A-Patch has been around since MSN Messenger 6 and kept up to date until today. What I like about A-Patch is its free, portable (don't installation of toolbar or any spyware), easy to use and it works.

There are two Remove Advertisement checkboxes on A-Patch and the difference is the first one removes the advertisement banner from the bottom of the contact list, and the second one is to remove the text advertisement from the bottom of your message window. Everything should look much cleaner after removing the ads from Windows Live Messenger 2011 but I noticed that the chat / conversation window still has a small advertisement at the bottom.

A-Patch doesn’t seem to remove that advertisement and every time I had to click on the X button to close the ad. Fortunately it is possible to hide the ad at the Windows Live Messenger 2011 chat window from the Options.

From Windows Live Messenger 2011, press Alt+T which will show the Tools menubar. Select Options. Click on Messages at the left navigation bar, uncheck “Show expanded footer in conversation windows” and click the OK button. You will notice that the ads are no longer shown at the bottom of the conversation window. Now Windows Live Messenger 2011 is perfectly clean without advertisement even while chatting. Took me a while to discover what is that “expanded footer” option for because the description is not very clear and doesn’t say anything about advertisement.

Protect CD Contents by Encrypting with TrueCrypt

If you ask anyone that knows about encryption, they would say that TrueCrypt is one the best out there. I have an old friend who used to be in the “scene” that was involved in warez and he uses TrueCrypt to protect the sensitive data on his computer in case one day the authorities decides to bust in to his house. If one follows the guide on using a complex passphrase, even FBI hackers fail to crack TrueCrypt using the dictionary attack.

One good thing about TrueCrypt is the portability where I can use it to protect data by encrypting it and then save both the TrueCrypt Volume and the software to a CD or DVD. The data in the disc will be encrypted which can be easily decrypted to access the files any time by just running TrueCrypt and mounting the volume with the correct password. The decryption is done instantly (on the fly) so you can immediately access your files upon entering the correct password. There are some shareware such as CD-Lock and GiliSoft Secure Disc Creator that encrypts disc but I will show you how you can do that for free with TrueCrypt.

1. Download the latest version of TrueCrypt. Currently the latest version is 7.0a.

2. Run the TrueCrypt setup file (TrueCrypt Setup 7.0a.exe). Accept the license agreement and at the second wizard mode, select Extract.

3. Run TrueCrypt.exe and click on Create Volume button.

4. Select “Create an encrypted file container” and click Next.

5. You are asked to either select “Standard” or “Hidden” TrueCrypt volume. This feature is very interesting and I hope I am able to explain in an easier way to understand.

The Standard volume let’s you create just one encrypted space. Let’s say you’re being threatened to reveal the password or something bad is going to happen to you. Revealing the password will decrypt all the encrypted files and the person who threatened you get all the files.
As for Hidden volume, it creates another encrypted volume on the existing encrypted space with another password. So if you gave the first password, the hidden volume will still stay hidden and not be revealed. Only if you mount the volume using the hidden volume password, then only the hidden volume will be mounted.

As a simple test, we’ll select the “Standard TrueCrypt volume” and click Next.

6. Now you’re asked to specify where should the TrueCrypt volume be saved to. Click the Select File button and set a name for example, dummy, and click Next.

7. There are a bunch of encryption algorithms to choose. Let’s leave it as default and click Next.

8. A normal CD have 650-700MB in space and DVD is 4.7GB. If you’re going to create an encrypted CD, let’s create the volume size as 600MB and click Next.

9. Enter a password. Make sure you use a good password and remember it. If you lose the password, you are not going to get back the encrypted files.

10. Click the Format button to format the volume and wait for a few seconds. Click Exit when the volume is created.

11. Now you’re back at the TrueCrypt main interface. Click on any drive letter that is on the program, and click the Select File button. Select dummy file and then click theMount button. Enter the password that you’ve specified in step 9.

12. Go to My Computer and you will see a new drive letter. Alternatively you can also double click on the drive that is mounted at TrueCrypt to directly open the drive. That is the encrypted volume (space) which is now decrypted. Copy the files that you want to encrypt to the drive.

13. Once you have finished copying the files to the mounted volume, to dismount, simply click on the drive at TrueCrypt to make sure that it’s highlight and then click theDismount button. Click Exit to close TrueCrypt.

14. To put it on a CD, just burn the 4 TrueCrypt files (TrueCrypt.exe, TrueCrypt Format.exe, truecrypt.sys, truecrypt-x64.sys) and dummy file to the disc.

To access the encrypted files in future, insert the CD to your computer, run TrueCrypt.exe and follow step 11 to mount the TrueCrypt volume. The files will be read-only and cannot be modified since it is written on a disc.

Here is how TrueCrypt works in summary:

1. Create volume (make an encrypted space): Refer step 3 to 10
2. Mount volume (map the encrypted space to a drive letter) Refer step 11
3. Copy files to Volume (Move any files to the mapped drive that you want to encrypt) Refer step 12
4. Dismount Volume (unmap encrypted drive). Refer step 13

File Copy Software Tested for Fastest Transfer Speed

Many of us know that it is possible to copy or move files & folders in Windows by either using your mouse to right click, select Copy and then Paste, or your keyboard's shortcut key CTRL + C to copy, CTRL + X to cut (for moving) and CTRL + V to paste. The biggest factor on the time taken to copy or move the files very much depend on the hard drive's speed (5400RPM, 7200RPM, SSD) and also the interface (PATA, SATA, SCSI). However, it is still possible to shorten the duration in copying or moving files if you use third party software to do it instead of relying on the Windows built-in function.

Most if not all file copy software claims that they are able to copy FASTER than Windows copy function. I wa curious to find it that is true and also to know which one is the fastest. Files copy software (Copy Handler 1.32.276, Copywhiz 4.0 Build 3, ExtremeCopy Pro 1.5.1, FastCopy 2.08, KillCopy 2.85, MiniCopier 0.5, QCopy 1.0.2, RichCopy 4.0.217, Robocopy, SuperCopier 2.2, TeraCopy 2.12, Ultracopier 0.2.0.15) are put to a simple test.

I simply copied a folder containing 2319 files, rangin from files as small as 1 KB to as big as 700MB to another hard drive using the software's default setting. The file copying testing methdology which I used is very simple and I have to admit that it is not enough to determine which is the "best" or "fastest" file copying software. However, the results does give you a hint on which file copy software you should be try and avoid.

I am quite surprise to find that only about half of the file copy software is able to copy faster than the default Windows 7 copy function and the rest takes longer time to finish copying. Hopefully this sample test will be an eye opener to those that are using the slower file copy software.

The good thing about file copying software is the ability to resume files that failed to copy. In Windows, if the copy failed, you'd have recopy and replace existing files that are already copied. Some file copy software above that are marked with an asterisk (*) are those that can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual. For example, using the hotkey CTRL + C and CTRL + V will automatically make the file copy software to copy and paste instead of using the Windows built-in copy function.

How to Set Your Desired Wallpaper as Folder Background Image in Windows XP

Here I will posting 3 methods to have any desired wallpaper as background image in any folder in Windows XP:

A. Using Desktop.ini Hack to Set a Wallpaper as Folder Background Image:

1. Open Command Prompt and set folder attribute to "system". Suppose there is a folder "Setup" in "C:\" drive, in which you want to set a wallpaper as background image. So give following command in Command Prompt:

attrib +s C:\Setup

It'll change the attribute to "system".

2. Now open Notepad and paste following code:

"IconArea_Text" stands for the text color, you can change it to white, yellow, blue, black or any other color. You just need to know the hexa-decimal number of the color and then replace the code in "IconArea_Text" section. A few most used color codes are as follows:

Green - 0x0000FF00

Blue - 0x00FF0000

Purple - 0x00C000C0

Red - 0x000000FF

Yellow - 0x0000FFFF

3. Now save the file with name "Desktop.ini" (including quotes) and copy the file in the desired folder which is "Setup" in our example.

4. Thats it. Close the folder and re-open it. Now it should show the wallpaper as background.

B. Using the Same Method of "IEShwiz.exe" file used in Windows 9x/NT/2000:

1. Copy "IEShwiz.exe" file from Windows 98/Me/NT/2000 and paste in "%windir%" directory (C:\Windows, if your Windows is installed in C:\ drive).

2. Now open regedit and goto:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell\

Now under this key, create a new key "Customize This Folder". Now select this newly created key and create another key under it with the name "Command". Select this new key "Command" and change the value of "Default" in right side pane to IESHWIZ.EXE %1

3. That's it. Now open any folder and right-click, you'll get an option "Customize This Folder". Click on it and follow the wizard and you'll be able to set a wallpaper as the background and to change font color.

C. Using 3rd party software "Windowpaper XP" to do the task easily:

The user profile service failed the logon or cannot be loaded.

If there is another administrator account that you can log into, then jump to step 7 after logging into that account.
However, if you can't get to any accounts at all, then start at step 1.

1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step.
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there. If it still doesn't work, then go to step17.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r.
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.
7. Hit (windows logo)+R.
8. Type regedit.
9. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
10. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 15.
11. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
12. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end.
13. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
14. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
15. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
16. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
17. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlighting Repair Your Computer.
18. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hitNext when it asks keyboard language.
19. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 23.
20. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
21. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD.
22. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer from a little below the center left.
23. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password /active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
24. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5.

**To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator /active:no

Reset System and Hidden Attributes for Files or Folders Caused by Virus

Most of the time the virus are programmed to disable Windows Task Manager, Regedit, command prompt, folder options and etc. These restrictions are meant to prevent a normal computer user from using these built-in Windows diagnostic tools to remove the virus from computer.

There are some virus that will cause destruction such as encrypting recently used files so you are forced to buy the decryption key from the virus programmer. Then there’s another type of virus such as BDS.Mirc.Backdoor that will hide your document files by setting the hidden and system attributes to the file. You can still see the files if you set to show hidden files and folders plus disabling hide operating system files. If the virus is capable of restricting Folder Options, chances are you think that your files has been wiped out by the virus but in fact it is hidden in your system.

Here’s how to show hidden files and folders or system files.

1. Go to Control Panel and open Folder Options.

2. Go to View tab and select “Show hidden files and folders”. Then uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating system files”. Do take note that some virus that are still active in computer will revert the changes that you made. So make sure your computer is clean from virus first by scanning with an antivirus program.

3. Try to look for your missing files in your directory or hard disk.
4. This is the method of doing it without using any software. Just run com
mand prompt (Start > Run > CMD), type the command attrib -H -S C:\path\to\your\files. You can also use the asterisk character to define multiple extensions. For example, attrib -H -S C:\nick\*.* would remove the hidden and system attribute of all files in nick folder at C drive.

Space Sniffer, find lost disk space the easy way

SpaceSniffer is a freeWare and portable tool application that lets you understand how folders and files are structured on your disks.

Start a scan process and see the overall situation. Bigger are the elements on the view, bigger are folders and files on your disk. You need more detail on a big folder? Just single click on it. The selected element will be detailed with its content.

Need more and more detail? Keep selecting elements and they'll discover their secrets to you. Need a larger view of a small folder? Then double click on it, and it'll zoom to the full extent of the view.

If you need to understand why no more free space is left on media, keep following bigger elements. Maybe you want to focus only on particular file types... ok. Just type the file type on the filter field (example: *.jpg) and press enter. The view will react and show you only JPEG files.
Want to exclude files? Then type a starting pipe before the filter (example: |*.jpg) and press enter. The view will show everything but JPEG files.

If you want to keep track of examined files you can tag them. Four colors are available. Just hover the mouse on a file and press CTRL+1 to tag it red. There are keys also for yellow, green and blue tagging. Use them as you wish. You can also filter on tags (example: :red will show only red tagges files, :all will show all tagged files and so on). You can also exclude tagged files (example: |:red will exclude all red tagged files)

Want to know if you have old files? Type the condition in the filter field (example: >2years) and the view will react accordingly.

You can also filter on file size, file date and combine all filters

Once you have your result, you can produce a textual report by using the embedded Export Module. You can even customize the report layout to match your needs.

Trick On How to change Boring Google Logo and Background Image:-

1) Using http://www.shinysearch.com/

Go to http://www.shinysearch.com/ and Enter the name in the Text Box, which will replace google Logo. Now Click on Create New Button. Now you will see your Logo appearing instead of Google. Bookmark it and make it as your default home page. Now every time you open your browser, your own Search Engine will open.

2) Using GreaseMonkey firefox add-on, this trick works only for FireFox users.

a) Install the GreaseMonkey firefox add-on.
b) Now install the necessary script.
c) After Installing, open www.Google.com
d) Now Double click the Google Logo and a box will appear with two text Boxes, for title and color.
e) Now, you can type your own text and assign any color for each word.
f) Different Numbers represent different color: 1 – blue, 2 – red, 3 – yellow,
4 – green or other – random.
g) Now Click on the “Change” Button.
h) Now you will see new Google Logo.

3) Using www.Buzzisearch.com

If you want a fancier text with Glitters, than go to www.Buzzisearch.com and Enter Your Name and Select the Style you want.
Here is your own search engine with your own name. Now Bookmark it or make it as your default home page.
4) How to Change Google Background Image:

Go to www.mcsearcher.com and than Enter the name and upload the picture. Than Click on Create Here, Now you will see your own picture as Background. Bookmark it and make it as your Home Page. Now Every time you open your Browser the same picture will appear.

You can use any of the above method.

My computer is performing slowly, how can I fix this?

Method 1 : Disk Cleanup
1) Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.
2) Choose either My Files Only or File from all users on computer.
3) Click Continue when prompted by the User Account Control dialog box.
4) Select the C drive in the drop down list.
5) Click OK and Disk Cleanup will calculate how much free disk space you can gain.
6) Select which File to Delete.
7) Click OK and click Delete Files when Prompted.

Method 2: Disk Defragmenter
1) Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
2) Click Continue when prompted by the User Account Control dialog box.
3) Click Defragment now.
4) Select which disks to defragment.
(Note: you may also schedule a time for disk defragmentation)
5) Click OK.
(Note: Disk Defragmentation may take a few minutes or a few hours depending on the amount of data on the hard disk)
Method 3 - Check the Hard Disk
1) Click Start > Computer.
2) Right Click the C: drive and click Properties and click the Tools tab.
3) Click Check Now.
4) Click Continue when prompted by the User Account Control dialog box.
5) Click Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
6) Click Start.
7) Click Schedule Disk Check.
8) Restart your computer to begin the disk check on drive C:
(Note: Hard drive disk checks can take a long time, depending on the size of the hard disk and the amount of data)

Neowin exclusively revealed Microsoft Morro to the world, today we can unveil that Microsoft's new and free Anti-Virus will be named Microsoft Security Essentials.

The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available in September according to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans. Microsoft has officially stated that Microsoft Security Essentials would be available by the end of 2009 at the latest. The company has been trialing internal versions since June 1.

Microsoft shocked the security industry on Tuesday by announcing that it will stop selling its consumer-focused Microsoft OneCare security software. Instead, Microsoft said that it will offer a new free alternative dubbed "Morro" in mid-2009. What does this sudden change in direction mean?

1. Microsoft is cutting its lossesAfter two years of hawking OneCare, the company barely made a blip in consumer security market share and was probably bleeding red ink. It is cheaper to give away Morro than to package, distribute, and promote OneCare.

2. There's a reason to remain in the marketSo why not kill endpoint security altogether? Good question. As long as Microsoft continues to offer Forefront (i.e., its commercial endpoint security product), Morro is a relatively easy thing to support. Alternatively, I can't see Microsoft walking away from any PC software. The PR implications of doing so are too dire.

3. Morro won't kill other alternativesFree is pretty compelling, but it is nothing new. Users could opt for a strong free alternative today called Clam AV, but Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, and Kaspersky still do pretty well with consumers. Users either don't know about Clam or believe that "free" software must have a catch. On another note, about 40 percent to 50 percent of consumers still buy security software at their local Best Buy, Frye Electronics, or Staples. With no revenue stream, I can't see Microsoft boxing up Morro and paying for shelf space, so Morro won't even be available to a large percentage of the potential market.

4. Microsoft won't bundle Morro in consumer WindowsTen years ago, I have no doubt that Microsoft would have made security part of the operating system. Heck, Microsoft gave away its antispyware software as recently as 2006. Pursuing this course of action doesn't make sense in this case, however. Aside from the obvious antitrust issues, there is another strategic reality here. Netscape and Internet computing threatened the Microsoft franchise. Symantec Endpoint Protection does not.

Whether industry pundits admit it or not, Microsoft has made great strides in security over the past five years, both in terms of products, processes, and industry leadership. These advances are extremely visible in the enterprise market, but even Microsoft couldn't extend this momentum into the brutal and fickle consumer space. There are too many other fast-growing, highly profitable market segments for Microsoft to pursue, so it simply makes no sense to keep fighting in a crowded market with dwindling margins.

Microsoft consumer security may become free, but expect to hear a lot less about Morro once Microsoft pulls OneCare from retailers' shelves.

REDMOND, Wash. — Nov. 18, 2008 — To address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware, Microsoft Corp. plans to offer a new consumer security offering focused on core anti-malware protection.

Code-named “Morro,” this streamlined solution will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans. This new solution, to be offered at no charge to consumers, will be architected for a smaller footprint that will use fewer computing resources, making it ideal for low-bandwidth scenarios or less powerful PCs. As part of Microsoft’s move to focus on this simplified offering, the company also announced today that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009.

“Customers around the world have told us that they need comprehensive, ongoing protection from new and existing threats, and we take that concern seriously,” said Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management for the Online Services and Windows Division at Microsoft. “This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware.”

Built on Microsoft’s award-winning malware protection engine, “Morro” will take advantage of the same core anti-malware technology that fuels the company’s current line of security products, which have received the VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, Checkmark Certification from West Coast Labs and certification from the International Computer Security Association Labs. The new solution will deliver the same core protection against malware as that offered through Microsoft’s enterprise solutions, but will not include many of the additional non-security features found in many consumer security suites.

Windows Live OneCare, one of the first all-in-one suites to be launched in the consumer market, includes a number of non-security features, such as printer sharing and automated PC tune-up. By shifting to focus on the core anti-malware features that most consumers still don’t keep up to date, “Morro” will be able to provide the essential protections that consumers need without overusing system resources, and will help more consumers have better protection against online threats.

“Because uptake of standard anti-malware is low around the world, particularly in developing nations, the availability of basic protection for anyone who wants it is all the more important,” said Roger Kay, founder and president of Endpoint Technologies Associates. “By offering such basic protection at no charge to the consumer, Microsoft is promoting a safer environment for PCs, service providers and e-commerce itself, since it is through unprotected PCs that the worst threats are introduced to the system as a whole.”

“Morro” will be available as a stand-alone download and offer malware protection for the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. When used in conjunction with the ongoing security and privacy enhancements of Windows and Internet Explorer, this new solution will offer consumers a robust, no-cost security solution to help protect against the majority of online threats.

Windows Live OneCare will continue to be sold for Windows XP and Windows Vista at retail through June 30, 2009. Direct sales of OneCare will be gradually phased out when “Morro” becomes available. Regardless of their method of purchase, Microsoft will ensure that all current customers remain protected through the life of their subscriptions.

Disable and Remove Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications Nag Screen

When you log on to a non-genuine copy of Windows XP, the following notification error message "This copy of Windows is not genuine" will pop-up on the logon process.And the nicely said "You may be victim of software counterfeiting" message on the bottom right corner of log-in screen.

Microsoft allows WIndows faithfuls to have 2 options: Get Genuine or Resolve Later. Click on Resolve Later will temporarily bypass the notification and let you login into and use Windows nagged with notification icon and messages, which will randomly appear as balloon notification message with an icon in the notification area (system tray).Clicking on the balloon notification or the notification area icon will lead you to the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Failure Web page that contains the specifics of the validation failure and the steps that you can take to make the operating system genuine.

To get rid of the WGA notifications that intends to remind you that your Windows is not validated, you can buy a validly licensed copy of genuine Microsoft Windows.

First Method

1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.

2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.

3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.

4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.

5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.

6. Lauch Regedit.

7. Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\

Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify

8. Delete the folder 'WgaLogon' and all its contents

9. Reboot Windows XP.

Note: With this method, you may be prompted to install WGA Notifications again which can still be unselected.

Second Method

Another alternative suggested by dman is by using System Restore to restore the PC to a previous restore point that WGA Notifications hasn't kicked in, and then carefully stop KB905474 from been applied to the system. To use System Restore, go to Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Systems Tools --> System Restore.

Note: Again, you may be prompted again to install WGA Notification, so it must be bypassed.

Third Method

This method involves using a cracked version of LegitCheckControl.dll to replace the original copy of LegitCheckControl.dll, and thus bypass the WGA validation and make Microsoft believes that your copy of Windows is genuine. To get rid of WGA Notifications warning messages, the patched version of WgaLogon.dll and WgaTray.exe to replace the existing files.

To apply the patch by replacing the files manually, try to end the respective processes in the Task Manager before deleting the existing files. Most likely is you will have to restart your PC in Safe Mode in order to replacing the original copy of LegitCheckControl.dll and related files. However, there has been automatic updater and even cracked WGA installer that automatically apply the patched version of WGA files.

On Tuesday, May 5 (PST), the RC will be available to everyone via our Customer Preview Program. As with the Beta, the Window 7 RC Customer Preview Program is a broad public program that offers the RC free to anyone who wants to download it. It will be available at least through June 30, 2009, with no limits on the number of downloads or product keys available.

So you don't need rush to make sure ger your copy. When you're ready to download the RC, it'll be waiting for you.

IMPORTANT: If you are running Windows 7 Beta you'll need to back up your data (preferably on an external device) and then do a clean install of the Window 7 Release Candidate. After installing Windows 7, you will need to reinstall applications and restore your files. If you need help with the installation process, please see the Installation Instructions.

If you're running Window Vista, you can install Window 7 RC without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data. But to be on the safe side, please do backup your data before you start.

It is possible to upgrade from beta build to RC build using a simple hack. If you want to upgrade from beta to RC, you will need to bypass the check for pre-release as mentioned in the Window 7 blog.

Step to upgrade from Beta to RC:

1. Download the ISO and burn the ISO to a DVD.

2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from ( a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).

3. Browse to the sources directory.

4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.

5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. You need to change the value to 7000 as it is the beta version build number.

6. Save the file in place with same name.

7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

With this change, you can upgrade from the beta version to the RC build.

Hack to Remove/Uninstall Symantec Norton Antivirus (SAV) Client without Password

Norton AntiVirus Clients or Symantec AntiVirus Clients especially Corporate Edition Clients can be installed as managed network setup type by a Symantec Antivirus Server. When a Symantec AntiVirus Client managed, it will prompt for password when uninstalling client via local computer Control Panel Add or Remove Program applet. If you don't know or forget the password, then the client is not able to uninstall or remove. And the SAV client uninstall password won't work with server group password too, as if you enter that password, you will receive an invalid password message.

The client uninstallation password is different from the server group password, and it can be set by the administrator through the Symantec System Center for the client that is managed. If the client uninstallation password has not been set or change specifically, it will still be the default password. Thus, first thing to try in order to successfully uninstall a Symantec Client Security program is by using the default password for the uninstalling client, which is symantec.

In the cases where Symantec AntiVirus server has been taken down and no longer exist, or the client computer has no access to company network, or the default client uninstall password does not work, the folllowing hack will enable you to remove Symantec AntiVirus without using a password:

1. Open Registry Editor (regedit)
2. Navigate to following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6
\CurrentVersion\Administrator Only\Security\
3. Change the value for useVPuninstallpassword key from 1 to 0.
4. Exit Registry Editor and now you can uninstall Symantec Antivirus Client.

The trick should work on most version of Symantec AntiVirus client or Norton AntiVirus client, including version 7, 8 9 or 10.

Save Internet Explorer favorites to another place

You use Internet Explorer and often save websites you like as bookmarks or favorites. Internet Explorer usually saves them to default folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites" but you would prefer a specific location of your choice. Internet Explorer does not offer the option to change the default location for favorites.

The path to the Favorites folder is stored by Internet Explorer in the Windows registry, where you can edit it. It is best to first close your browser and copy the Favorites folder to the new location you want to use. Now, click on 'Start - Run', type 'regedit' and press [Enter]. In the registry editor, open the key

'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellFolders\'.

'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User ShellFolders\'.

In the right pane of the window, double click on 'Favorites' and in the dialog box, enter the new path to the bookmark. Close it with 'OK'. Then do the same thing with the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellFolders\'. After restarting, Internet Explorer will pick up your folder structure from the new location now save all the bookmarks you create there.

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.

Solutions:
Computer is booting from a non-bootable source
Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files and/or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive. Additional information about checking the CD-ROM drive connections can be found on document CH000213.

Additional information: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any type of card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer.

Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS
Verify that your computer hard disk drive is properly setup in the BIOS / CMOS setup. Improper settings can cause this error. Additional information on how to enter the BIOS / CMOS setup can be found in document CH000192.

Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file
Windows 2000 users
If your computer is using Microsoft Windows 2000 and you are encountering the NTLDR error. Create the below boot.ini file on the floppy diskette drive.

Copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files from another computer using the same operating system. Both of these files are located in the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. For example, C:\NTLDR and C:\NTDETECT.COM should be the locations of these files on many computers.

Please keep in mind that these files are hidden system files, if you need additional help with viewing hidden files in Windows please see document CH000516.

Once these files have been copied to a floppy diskette reboot the computer and copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files to the root directory of the primary hard disk drive. Below is an example of what commonly should be performed from the A:\> drive.

After the above two files have been copied, remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

Windows XP users
1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is "e." This letter may be different on your computer.

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file
Edit the boot.ini on the root directory of the hard disk drive and verify that it is pointing to the correct location of your Windows operating system and that the partitions are properly defined. Additional information about the boot.ini can be found on document CH000492.

Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32
If you are getting this error message while you are attempting to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME running FAT32 please try the below recommendations.

1. Boot the computer with a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME bootable diskette.
2. At the A:\> prompt type:sys c:
3. After pressing enter you should receive the "System Transferred" message. Once this has been completed remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

New hard disk drive being added
If you are attempting to add a new hard disk drive to the computer make sure that drive is a blank drive. Adding a new hard disk drive to a computer that already has Windows installed on it may cause the NTLDR error to occur.

If you are unsure if the new drive is blank or not try booting from a bootable diskette and format the new hard disk drive.

Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP
If you have tried each of the above recommendations that apply to your situation and you continue to experience this issue it is possible you may have a seriously corrupted version of Microsoft Windows. Therefore we would recommend you reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

If you are encountering this issue during your setup you may wish to completely erase your computer hard disk drive and all of its existing data and then install Microsoft Windows 2000 / Windows XP. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on document CH000186.

Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable
This issue has been known to be caused by a loose or fault IDE/EIDE cable. If the above recommendation does not resolve your issue and your computer hard disk drive is using an IDE or EIDE interface. Verify the computer hard disk drive cable is firmly connected by disconnected and reconnecting the cable.

If the issue continues it is also a possibility that the computer has a faulty cable, try replacing the hard disk drive cable with another cable and/or a new cable.
